How to hide your IP address?

1

Technically it's not possible to hide the public (WAN) IP on a home network. Completely hiding the IP address of a network enabled device would make it virtually inaccessible, much like it is impossible to deliver an unaddressed  letter to its destination. That is, it would be impossible to use that device to connect the internet. On the other hand, it is possible, and sometimes desirable to hide our public (WAN) IP address from curious eyes (hackers) and from many internet servers (that is, from web sites such as forums, game sites, etc.).

When we are connecting to the Internet, our home computer (or network router) is assigned a public IP address. As we visit Web sites or other Internet servers, that public IP address is transmitted and recorded in log files kept on those servers. Access logs leave behind a trail of our Internet activity. If it were possible to somehow hide your public IP address, its Internet activity would become much more difficult to trace.

IP address is our online identity and could be used by hackers to break into our computer, steal personal information, or commit other crimes against us. Our IP address is exposed every time when we visit a website. By Hiding IP we can surf anonymously , change our IP address, prevent identity theft, and guard against hacker intrusions.

WARNING: If you are doing something regarded as crime under applicable laws, and try to hide your ip for such purposes, you should be aware that there is nothing as complete hiding if and when your online actions are under investigation. Put it simply, you are not "invisible" at all as far as the law enforcement bodies are concerned.

Ways to Hide IP Address:

1. Using an Anonymous Proxy Server

An anonymous proxy server ("proxy") is a special type of server that acts as an intermediary between a home network and the rest of the Internet. An anonymous proxy server makes requests for Internet information on your behalf, using its own IP address instead of yours. Your computer only accesses Web sites indirectly, through the proxy server. This way, Web sites will see the proxy's IP address, not your home IP address.
There are a variety of these proxy servers available:
  • Transparent Proxy Server
  • Anonymous Proxy Server
  • Distorting Proxy Server
  • High Anonymity Proxy Server (Elite Proxy)

NOTE: Please be aware that many free anonymous proxies are run by criminals with the only intention to spy on your data.

2. Using IP Hiding Software

There are many IP hiding software available. Some are free and provided as shareware, while others are sold by monthly/yearly subscription or at a one-time price. Such proxy software are usually faster and more reliable. These software provides VPN services.

What is VPN services ?

A virtual private network (VPN) protects your data and identity over public networks, like the Internet and wireless hotspots. Various protocols are used to create an encrypted tunnel that transports data securely. While a firewall may protect the data on your computer, a VPN will protect your data on the Internet. The goal of a VPN is to implement the same level of security provided by private networks at substantially lower costs. VPN services provide different gateway cities where the IP address assigned to your computer is located. This allows users to access websites only available to users from a certain country.

There are some good IP hiding softwares.

3 . Hiding IP Address Through TOR

Tor is a network of virtual tunnels that allows people and groups to improve their privacy and security on the Internet. It also enables software developers to create new communication tools with built-in privacy features. Tor provides the foundation for a range of applications that allow organizations and individuals to share information over public networks without compromising their privacy.
